Not-so-short

W.B. Belcher (Bill) grew up in a mill town in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts. He earned a BA in English and Theatre Arts from Hartwick College (Oneonta, NY) and an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College (Plainfield, VT), where he studied both fiction and playwriting.

Lay Down Your Weary Tune, his debut novel, was released in 2016 from Other Press. His writing has appeared in various outlets, including Post Road, Entropy, The Papercuts Anthology: Volume 2 (Cutlass Press), and The Alt Weekly, an alternative newsweekly where he served as a contributing writer for the arts.

As a teacher, Belcher has led fiction writing and grant writing workshops for a variety of groups in New York and Massachusetts, including Skidmore College, The Sage Colleges, Saratoga Arts, the Easton Library, and the Greenwich Library, among others. From 2006-2008, he served as community workshop facilitator and reading series coordinator for Inkberry, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the literary arts in the Berkshires.

Most of Belcher's professional life has been spent in the nonprofit world. In 2022, he was appointed President of Ucross Foundation, the renowned artist residency program in northern Wyoming. He is also the Founder of Wordhorse Strategies, LLC, a writing and fundraising consulting business that focuses on nonprofit arts organizations. Prior to Ucross, Belcher served as Director of External Affairs for The Hyde Collection and Director of Development for the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). Earlier in his career, he also worked for The Sage Colleges, McGraw-Hill Higher Education, and Glimmerglass Opera. As a volunteer, he’s served on the board of directors at Hubbard Hall Center for the Arts and Education, as well as the board of Caffe Lena, the oldest continually operating folk music coffeehouse in the country.

He splits his time between upstate New York and northern Wyoming.
